On October 29, 2011, in the settlement of Le Bons Bay on the South Island of New Zealand, the Orthodox Church of the Protection of the Mother of God was consecrated. Its construction began with the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion in a place where an Orthodox children's camp is held annually.

The creation of the church was led by Archimandrite Alexy, the spiritual father of the Spaso-Transfiguration Monastery in Australia, along with a group of laypeople.

Construction began in February 2007 under the guidance of Novgorod master-restorer Alexander Pavlovich Lebedenko and his student Dmitry Basnin. The project also involved seminary graduate and carpenter Priest Evgeny Kulanov, his brother Grigory, their parents, and other volunteers. By the end of June, the main construction work was completed. In the following years, land, road, and landscaping works were carried out, a bell tower was built, the consequences of a recent earthquake were addressed, and the dormitory was renovated. Currently, the construction of a library is underway.

Icon painting and the creation of the iconostasis began simultaneously with the erection of the church. The first icon painted by Father Alexy was the image of "The Savior Not Made by Hands," followed by the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. A small icon painting workshop was organized on site. The icons of Saint Nicholas, the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, and Seraphim of Sarov were painted in the monastery in Australia before the consecration. Galina Kim participated in the creation of the icons for the festive row. Special mention should be made of the work of the embroiderers and the development of church coverings and curtains.

The style and quality of the icon painting, architecture, and construction allow us to speak of the creation of the church in the traditions of the ancient Russian Orthodox Church.
