The village was founded in the second half of the 17th century by settlers who served in a protective capacity in the district. As a reward for this, they received land grants known as quarters, and later they were called one-dweller families.

Initially, the settlement was located on the right hilly bank. Later, landowners began to acquire land here and resettle their peasants from other estates on both banks of the Red River. Among the noble owners was Prince Gavrila Nazarov.

In 1770, a stone church with two altars was built in Novikovka with funds from the parishioners. The main altar was consecrated in the name of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the side altar was dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

After the church was built, the village of Novikovka also began to be called Pokrovsk, in honor of the main altar feast. However, in the 20th century, this name was no longer used.
