Modern Lower Pokrovka once consisted of two separate settlements: Lower Pokrovka, also known as New Pokrovka or Novopokrovka, and Middle Pokrovka. The western part of the village, the former Lower Pokrovka, was founded in 1886 on rented lands by peasant settlers from Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Poltava, Tambov, and Penza provinces. The first settlers arrived from the Don, bringing with them an icon of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and promised the priest who blessed the icon to name the future village Pokrovka.

From early 1894, Lower Pokrovka and the Khutor of Kharitonovka became an independent Orthodox parish with its own priest and psalmist. In 1895, a church was built in the village in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, erected through the efforts of the parishioners. The church was cold, wooden, on a stone foundation, with a bell tower and one altar, accommodating 350 people. The priest lived in a communal house. Parish schools for boys and girls existed separately but did not have their own building.

In 1986, the villagers donated the preserved 17-kilogram bell of the Pokrov Church, destroyed in the 1930s, to the district museum.
