The cross is one of the oldest symbols known to many nations long before Christianity. After the Resurrection of Christ, it became a symbol of salvation and glory for the Christian Church. All Orthodox churches have various crosses that differ in purpose and shape.

The first cross in the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Oreanda, the estate of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, appeared on October 1, 1884, when a water blessing service was held to consecrate the site for the church's construction. After the service, the first wooden eight-pointed cross was erected on a six-meter pole at the future altar apse. The cross was adorned with greenery and flowers, and all present admired it. Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich described this event as very solemn and touching, noting that everyone was pleased and happy.

By June 8, 1885, the church walls were nearly completed, and six marble crosses were installed in them. By August, a drum with a dome was built, on which a cross was to be placed. However, the dome cross turned out to be insufficiently sturdy, and it could not be raised. Konstantin Nikolaevich ordered a wooden cross from carpenter Kubishko, and on August 6, 1885, it was installed on the dome. This cross contained a Byzantine bronze cross found in Oreanda. Later, the wooden cross was moved to the altar.

For the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Grand Duke planned to consecrate the church, but the church utensils and the new dome cross were delayed in Moscow. After several unsuccessful attempts, the cross was delivered on September 30 and installed on the dome. A service was held in the church, and the cross was sprinkled with holy water. During the raising of the cross, the church choir sang prayers, and the new cross shone in the sun.

Subsequently, other unique crosses appeared in the Oreanda church, including the Life-Giving Cross adorned with precious stones and a cross containing particles of holy relics. In the post-revolutionary period, many of these crosses disappeared or were destroyed. In 1993, a new temporary cross was installed on the dome, and in 2002, a cross in the Byzantine style appeared on the new bell tower.

Currently, several unique crosses containing particles of saints' relics are located in the church altar. In the past, there was another cross in Oreanda, installed on Cross Mountain. After the revolution, the cross was destroyed, but the name of the mountain remained. In 2008, an Orthodox cross was again installed on the mountain, which became a memorial site for those who died in World War I. In 2013, the cross was consecrated and reinstalled above Oreanda.
