The stone church in the village of Marisola was laid on September 7, 1880. Its construction was funded by the parish's charitable contributions, donations from believers, and benefactors, among whom was the righteous Saint John of Kronstadt. The church, dedicated to the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was completed in 1888 and consecrated on November 6 by the blessing of Bishop Sergius Serafimov of Vyatka and Slobodsk.

The church is quite original in its architecture. In the 1980s and 1990s, there was an opinion that the Intercession Church was built according to a standard project by architect K. Ton, known for the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. However, this version did not gain wide recognition, as K. Ton's projects, one of the founders of the Russian-Byzantine style, contain more ancient Russian motifs than the Intercession Church.

Experts suggest that the project of the church may have involved St. Petersburg architect A.M. Gornostayev, who successfully combined ancient Russian and Gothic motifs and became the founder of the national style in church architecture of the 19th century. A comparison of his buildings on Valaam, the Church of All Saints in the White Skete, and the Transfiguration Cathedral with the Intercession Church shows many similarities: faceted domes, pointed windows, and the nature of decorative embellishments. This makes the Intercession Church a unique architectural monument in the Mari region.

The interior paintings were done by Vladimir painters. In 1895, the Archbishop of Vyatka and Slobodsk consecrated the church on the feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. By 1915, chapels in the village of Ershi and on the banks of the Shaba River were added to the church.

The parish also had schools of the Brotherhood of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in the villages of Bolshie Klyuchi and Onodur.

During the Soviet era, the church faced the fate of many Orthodox shrines. In 1935, the church building was sealed, in 1936 the bells were removed from the bell tower for melting, and in the autumn of 1937, the upper tiers of the bell tower were destroyed, followed by the dismantling of the entire bell tower. The church was used as a grain storage facility.

In 1990, the restoration of the Intercession Church began. A community of believers was registered in Marisola, and the first service was held that same year. Currently, the church is associated with the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Zashizhimye.
