In 1781, court counselor Timofey Maslenitsky described the churches of the district town of Kurmysh, which numbered seven. The first of them was a wooden church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a chapel of St. George the Great Martyr. The second, a recently built stone church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was not yet consecrated. The third, located near the fortress, was a stone church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The fourth was a stone church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with two chapels: All Saints and the Evangelist John the Theologian. The fifth, wooden, is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and is located at the disabled settlement. The sixth was a stone church of Our Lady of Kazan with a chapel of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica. The seventh was a wooden church of the Archangel Michael.

By 1900, N.I. Bazhenov described the churches of Kurmysh as follows. The Assumption Cathedral, a stone temple built on voluntary donations in 1791, has three altars: the main one in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God, one in honor of St. John the Warrior, and another in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. There are two attached churches at the cathedral: a city church dedicated to St. Tikhon of Zadonsk and a cemetery church, which was originally built in 1688 and is wooden.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, a stone temple erected in 1774 on voluntary donations, has three altars: the main one in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the right one in honor of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, and the left one in honor of All Saints.

The Intercession Church, a stone temple built in 1745 by merchant Vasily Bryukhanov, has two altars: the main one in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a chapel in honor of St. Nicholas the Bishop and Wonderworker. These descriptions show that even in the early periods of Kurmysh's existence, the city had many churches.
