From the Karlin border, which ran along the Karla River and was established long before the founding of the city of Simbirsk, one hundred mounted Cossacks were transferred to the new Simbirsk border. They were settled in the Kuralov settlement on the Sviyaga River, 9 versts below Simbirsk. Today, there are no traces left of the Kuralov settlement, and since 1708, the settlement itself has been called the Karlin sloboda.

These Cossacks were allocated 3180 desyatinas of land for plowing and 1000 desyatinas for haymaking. During the general land survey, the sloboda had 102 households of plow soldiers, 264 men and 272 women, with land amounting to 4152 desyatinas and 91 sazhen, of which 682 desyatinas and 2072 sazhen were flood meadows in the Volga floodplain near Simbirsk.

The first church in the Karlin sloboda was built in 1654 and dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. In 1652, a blessed decree was issued for the construction of the church at the request of Simbirsk mounted Cossacks Florika Alexeev and his comrades, with two altars. This church fell into disrepair and was replaced in 1767 by a new wooden one, which also became dilapidated and cramped over time. Therefore, in 1897, a new stone church was consecrated in the name of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. A school in the sloboda has existed since 1868.
