In 1809, the construction of a church in honor of the Intercession of the Mother of God began, with an altar dedicated to Archangel Michael. The temple was consecrated in 1817. The building was made of stone and was cold, with a bell tower and an iron roof. After its opening, the clergy included a priest, a deacon, a clerk, and a sexton. In 1842, a home school for literacy opened in Kanayevka under the guidance of Priest Stefanil. Following this, a prosperous peasant, Zapaschikov, and a merchant from Nikolaev, Anikin, who purchased grain and operated a store for imported goods, opened two more such schools. In 1894, a church parish school for literacy was established. A library also operated at the church, and the clergy included a priest, a deacon, and a psalmist, who lived in communal wooden houses. In 1904, a new stone church for 1,200 people was built with the funds of parishioners, featuring a bell tower and a single altar in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, replacing the old temple.

In the 1930s, the Intercession Church was closed and later destroyed.
