In ancient times, there was a men's monastery called the Pokrovsky Monastery near the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The monastery was headed by an abbot who was subordinate to the Yuriev-Polsky Archangel Monastery. During the reign of Empress Anna Ioannovna, the monastery was funded by Prince Alexei Mikhailovich Cherkassky, who allocated 29 rubles and 50 quarters of bread. In 1754, due to the cessation of funding, the monastery was closed, and the monks were transferred to the Spasokukotsky Monastery in the Suzdal district, and the church became a parish church.

About 250 peasant households from the Church of the Elevation were attached to this church. In 1873, the Pokrovskaya Church became the cathedral church of Ivanovo, Voznesensky. The cathedral contains two stone churches: the cold Pokrovskaya and the warm Troitskaya, with a bell tower and stone fence. The cold Pokrovskaya church, built in 1693, has three altars: the main one in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and two chapels, in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Sergius of Radonezh.

The warm Troitskaya church was erected in 1817 through the efforts of peasant Osip Vasilyevich Gandurin and his brothers. It also has three altars: the main one in honor of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity and two side altars, in honor of the Sign of the Mother of God and the Smolensk Mother of God. The icons, church utensils, and sacristy in the churches are richly adorned with silver and gold, especially the ancient icon of the Kazan Mother of God with a pearl robe and precious stones.

In 1882, the Church of St. Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky was attached to the Pokrovskaya Church, built by merchant Paramon Kolenkov from a former chapel. In 1887, it was expanded and re-consecrated through the efforts of church elder Ivan Nemtsov. In 1891, Nemtsov built a bell tower for the church, and in 1893, a new iconostasis appeared in the church, the walls were painted with sacred images, and a heating stove was installed.

The Pokrovsky Cathedral owns two stone houses. One of them houses a charitable institution, and the other is for storing church property, a candle warehouse from the diocesan factory, a room for caretakers, and a section for the church library. The parish includes a protodeacon, two priests, a deacon, and four psalmists. The parish has 729 households, 1834 men, and 2018 women.
