Bolshoy Makatele is a village located in the Pervomaysky District. According to N.V. Morokhin's "Nizhny Novgorod Toponymic Dictionary," the name of the village is associated with the Muslim name Makat, which means "guided by Allah," and Finno-Ugric roots "ela" (forest stream) and "ma" (plot), which can be interpreted as the plot of Makat by the forest stream. The village has been known since 1593. By the order of the Department for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod Region dated April 24, 2000, No. 5-OD, the village's Pokrovskaya Church was recognized as a historical and cultural heritage site. The church, dated 1816, includes the main altar of the Intercession of the Mother of God and chapels of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and the martyrs Flora and Lavra. However, order 5-OD lost its validity on October 20, 2014, in accordance with order No. 159. Near the altar of the church are buried A.N. and N.V. Karamzins.
