In the early 19th century, there was a chapel in Bolshaya Purga, built in 1781 from the Debyosskaya Trinity Church. By the decree of the Holy Synod on May 26, 1850, the residents of Purga were allowed to build a temporary wooden church. However, the locals either did not want or could not rebuild it, so after four years they purchased an old wooden church from the Debyoss, dismantled it, and installed it in a new location.

The wooden church was built in 1854 with funds from the parishioners and had two altars: the first was consecrated on May 19, 1855, in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the second, on July 11, 1864, in the name of the Holy Prophet Elijah. The establishment of the parish was related to the remoteness of the settlements from the local church in the village of Debyoss.

The Bolshaya Purga parish included 17 settlements that were previously part of the parish of the village of Debyoss. In 1850, the population of the parish consisted of 40 Russian men and 35 women, as well as 757 Votyaks men and 781 women. By 1900, after the separation of 15 settlements into new parishes, the Bolshaya Purga parish included 28 settlements.

According to data from 1909, the parish had 1172 Russian men and 1226 women, as well as 1437 Votyaks men and 1430 women, all Orthodox.

Over the 60 years of its existence, the Bolshaya Purga parish changed in terms of its clergy and settlements. Since 1855, the clergy consisted of a priest, a deacon, and a psalmist, and from 1899, it included two priests, a deacon, and two psalmists.

The first priest of the parish was Ioann Spassky, who served from August 1, 1850, until 1894. Alongside him served deacon Stefan Smirnov, sexton Matvey Kostrov, and church elder Terenty Korepanov.

The wooden church deteriorated, and in the late 1880s, parishioners began to consider building a stone church. The project was developed by the Vyatka provincial architect V.M. Druzhinin in 1890, but it was significantly altered by I.A. Charushin. Since 1889, parishioners collected funds for construction. The foundation of the stone building was laid on June 20, 1891, and it was completed in 7 years.

The church was five-domed with a tent-like bell tower, reminiscent of Moscow churches from the pre-Peter era. In 1899, the main altar was consecrated in the name of the Intercession of the Mother of God. In 1907, a bell weighing 107 poods was acquired.

The village of Bolshaya Purga became a bustling trading point. Annually, starting from 1905, fairs and markets were held in the village. As of January 1, 1911, the church had a barn, firewood storage, a shop, and other buildings.

In 1938, G. Belyavitsky served in the church. In 1939, the domes were removed, and in 1940, the bells. The church was closed in 1941, and its building was used as a machine and tractor station.

In the summer of 2011, Cossacks and parishioners began to clean the church and its territory. Restoration of the church began in 2012.
