In 1910, Bolshaya Kushma received the status of a village. In ancient times, according to V. Dal's dictionary, a village was defined as a settled place inhabited by peasants with a church. The Kushma church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was built on the eve of World War I, before 1914, on the site of an old chapel. The exact date of construction is unknown, but the first stone was laid in 1906. Locals recall that the stones for the foundation were brought on carts from the Shumikha station, and the lime was slaked in pits for three years. The construction was carried out by the entire village. Maria Titovna Bazhenova recounted that the bricks for the church were produced at the factory of Nikita Artemyevich Bazhenov, who was later dispossessed and exiled to Murmansk. During the war, his family returned and was buried in the local cemetery. The large bell was attempted to be removed, but it broke upon falling. According to another version, the bell remained intact but was taken away in an unknown direction. The church is built of red brick in the shape of a cross, with two altars and seven domes. The height of the building is 28 meters. There is little information about the church in the historical and local lore museum of Shumikha. The museum director, Yu. A. Petrov, reported that since 1910, the priest was Peter Falysovsky, and the last was Father Peter Motorin, who was buried in the village of Khokhly. The church was erected on a high place visible from afar, oriented to the cardinal directions. The entrance is located on the western side, while the altar is on the eastern side. The church serves as a meeting place for God and man, reminding of the spiritual world. The book 'Basics of Orthodoxy' states that the church is conceived as a model of the universe. It symbolizes a ship on which believers sail to salvation. In the memories of Stepanida Egorovna Mitskevich, it is mentioned that she was baptized in this church in 1927. During collectivization, there were plans to destroy the church, but the elder buried it under seed grain. In Soviet times, the building was used as a warehouse and vegetable storage. In 1946, a fire occurred, but the church was saved. In 1998, Hieromonk Cornelius Mokhov began the restoration of the church. Students from the local school helped with cleaning and painting. In 2000, planned restoration began. In 2000, the altar part was restored, in 2001 the first cross was installed, in 2002 carpentry work was done, in 2003 heating was installed, in 2004 the roof was covered, in 2005 a porch was built, in 2006 drainage work was carried out, in 2007 the foundation was renewed, in 2008 the interior finishing was completed, and in 2009 plastic windows were installed. Local residents and specialists from Trekhgorny assisted in the restoration. In 2012, Hieromonk Abel Papulov became the rector, and church life continues.
