The Church of Peter and Paul in the estate of Kotlubatsky was built between 1813 and 1825 according to a design by M.P. Korinfsky, a native of Arzamas and likely one of the most outstanding masters of classicism in the Volga region. The completion of the construction in Kostianka almost coincides with the beginning of the erection of the Trinity Cathedral in Simbirsk, which became the pinnacle of Korinfsky's work. The architectural similarity between these two churches is evident. Together with the preserved Church of the Resurrection of the Word in the village of Yuryevo, which also develops the theme of a monumental rotunda, the church in Kostianka can be considered a 'dress rehearsal' for the Simbirsk cathedral. The height of the main volume was 45 meters, while the free-standing bell tower, absent in Yuryevo and Simbirsk, was 60 meters. The Peter and Paul Church in the Kotlubatsky estate is smaller than the Trinity Cathedral, and the transition from the main volume, which is still distinctly octagonal here, to the rotunda is not as successful as in Simbirsk. However, in Korinfsky's work, these two buildings are chronologically and evolutionarily linked. Their fates turned out to be equally tragic: the Simbirsk Trinity Cathedral was blown up in 1936, while the church in Kostianka stood until 1957. Unlike the well-known Simbirsk cathedral, the Church of Peter and Paul remained virtually unknown until 2012, when participants in the 'Places of Memory of Nizhny Novgorod Region' project managed to find the only surviving photograph of the temple, taken by a resident of Kostianka, Ivan Grigoryevich Bubnov.
