The village of Varvarskoe is located in the Kstovo district. Researcher Kirill Lupanov reports that there were two churches in this village: the Trinity Church, built in 1753, and the Nikon Church, constructed in 1764.

According to the book "Saint Seraphim of Sarov and the Nizhny Novgorod Land", a skete of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra existed in Varvarskoe since the 17th century. For many years, local residents prayed in both churches. The village was adjacent to four villages, which were divided into two parishes. The wooden Trinity Church with a bell tower was built in 1753 at the expense of the parishioners. The church had two altars: the main one in honor of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity and a side altar in the refectory in honor of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. In 1909, the church warden Ivan Stepanovich Sukhov acquired an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "The Sign", a new chandelier, and carved Royal doors for the altar to decorate the Trinity Church.

The second church of the village, dedicated to Saint Nikon of Radonezh, burned down in the 18th century. In 1899, a new wooden church was built with the funds of parishioners and benefactors. In 1911, the Trinity parish had 143 households, 396 women, and 407 men, while the Nikon parish had 211 households, 603 men, and 636 women. With the growth of the number of parishioners, the peasants built a new stone church to replace the dilapidated Trinity Church shortly before the revolution. In the 1930s, the churches in Varvarskoe were closed: the wooden church was destroyed, and the stone church was used as a collective farm warehouse for a long time. The restoration of the Trinity Church began in the spring of 2014 with the clearing of the territory, and the first prayer service was held on April 2. On June 1, Metropolitan Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas visited the recovering church.
