If you decide to take a walk in Zamoskvorechye on Sunday, around eleven o'clock you will hear the amazing ringing of church bells coming from the numerous temples that this area is famous for. Following the sound, you will find yourself at the bell tower of one of the ancient churches located in the historic district of "Kuznetskaya Sloboda." This is St. Nicholas Church in Kuznetsy.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, there were several church buildings here. One of them, a wooden structure, has been known since 1491, while another, a stone church, was built in 1683 in the style of "Russian ornamentation." It is believed that the blacksmiths living in the sloboda funded the construction of the stone church. Although this temple has not survived, it is assumed that it was indeed built in this style. Over time, architectural styles changed, which was reflected in the appearance of the church.

In 1805, the old building was demolished, and a new temple was constructed in the style of mature classicism, characteristic of masters such as Matvey and Rodion Kazakov. Although the exact authorship is unknown, the architecture bears the features typical of these architects.

The temple has a composition in the shape of a "ship," with a bell tower, refectory, and the church itself. The four-pillar refectory was rebuilt in 1847, and at that time, a third tier was added to the bell tower. The church is a rotunda with a dome and light windows. The original architectural solution includes four risalits with three-part windows that transition into "lucarnes" on the dome. This solution is richer than the traditional "Venetian windows," with a semicircular completion and a half-fronton.

The dome is topped with a drum with an elegant finial, supported by paired buttresses in the form of volutes, which is an element of Baroque. On the first tier, entrances are located on the northern and southern sides, framed by pilasters and a half-fronton. Above the windows and below the cornice are bas-reliefs of the four evangelists. Although their names are not specified, it is assumed that these are John and Luke on one side, and Matthew and Mark on the other.

The three-tiered bell tower is designed in the Baroque style, with 12 bells, two of which were cast in 1849. One of them, weighing 2448 kg, was transferred from St. Nicholas Church "in Pyzhy."

The windows of the refectory are framed by pilasters with a semicircular fronton, and the corners are decorated with rustication. The church has an outstanding apse that increases its volume. The territory is enclosed by a fence with gates and wickets adorned with mosaics of St. Nicholas. The iconostasis is made in the classical style.

The church has never been closed. Its main shrine is the icon of the Mother of God "Relieve My Sorrows."

Over the years, restoration work has been carried out: in 1950, the iconostasis was gilded, in 1982, the domes, and from 1987 to 1999, a parish house was built. Since 1992, the church has been the base church of the Orthodox St. Tikhon's University of Humanities.
