The construction of the stone Nicholas Church was initiated by factory owner Ivan Rodionovich Batyshev at the Verkhne-Zheleznytsky factory in the Ardatov district of Nizhny Novgorod province. The church, which served the residents of the wire factory and the village of Lyapukhivka, was laid in 1808 and completed in 1811.

The temple had three altars: the main one was dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, while the side altars were dedicated to St. Seraphim of Sarov and the icon of the Mother of God "The Sign."

A church parish school operated in the village of Provolochnoe. In 1916, the parish had 1,805 men and 1,817 women.

Services in the church continued until October 1937, when it was closed and the keys were confiscated. Soon after, icons were removed from the church, church utensils were looted, and windows were broken. The cast-iron fence was dismantled and taken away. For a long time, the church remained abandoned as the authorities could not find a use for it.

On June 23, 1991, the Vily settlement council allowed the restoration of the church as an architectural monument. Thanks to the efforts of future parishioners, work began in 1993 to clean the area and remove debris.

Two years later, the church was handed over to the Moscow Patriarchate, and on October 25, 1995, the vicar of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, Bishop Ierofey, consecrated the altar in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and conducted the first Divine Liturgy.
