The village of Ugolniki is located in the Myshkin district, which was previously part of the Myshkin county. It is situated on the right bank of the Volga, 5 km upstream from the city of Myshkin. Since the 16th century, this place has been the property of the ancient Yaroslav noble family of Motovilovs. In 1786, a church was built here. In the 19th century, a large industrial complex owned by the Sheremetevs was located near Ugolniki. It included sawmill operations, a brick factory, a mill, and a forge. The final railway station of the Yukhotsk estate was also located here, primarily intended for transporting timber to the Volga. The village of Ugolniki served as a Volga port for the estates of the counts.
