The village of Starye Kotlitsy is located 100 versts from Vladimir and 19 versts from Murom. According to the scribal books of 1629-1630, there was a wooden church in the settlement of Starye Kotlitsy dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, with an altar in honor of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, as well as a church in honor of Archangel Michael. The 1676 records mention the parish of the village with the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the houses of priest Stefan and priests Boris and Kalistrat, as well as the house of the deacons.

An ancient bell indicates that in 1690 there was a church of the Kazan Mother of God and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Starye Kotlitsy. According to the local church chronicle, this church was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. The new wooden church stood until 1867, when a refectory of the stone temple and a stone bell tower were built. The main church was finally completed and consecrated in 1879. The bell tower retains a bell with an inscription from 1690, indicating that the nobleman Semyon Matveyevich Korovkov donated it to the church of the Kazan Mother of God and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The new temple has three altars: the main one in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, in the warm refectory, in honor of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God and Archangel Michael. The church is richly supplied with utensils, vestments, holy icons, and liturgical books. Among the icons, parishioners especially venerate the Bogolyubskaya icon of the Mother of God.

According to the church's staff, there are two priests, a deacon, and two psalmists. Their maintenance is ensured by income from services and sacramental fees, amounting to up to 1500 rubles per year, with no other sources of income. The houses of the clergy are located on church land. The parish includes Starye Kotlitsy and 11 villages, where the clerical records list 728 households, 2383 men, and 2426 women. A church-parish school operates at the church, and a zemstvo public school has been opened in the village of Mikhalevo.
