The Nikolayevskaya church in the village of Shangskoye Gorodishche was built of stone in 1842 with funds from parishioners. It has a stone bell tower and is surrounded by a stone fence with an iron grille, where clergymen are buried. The church has three altars: in honor of the Resurrection of Christ, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the Venerable Zosima and Savvatiy of Solovki. The second church, Florovskaya, is wooden and without a bell tower, built in 1795 and renovated in 1885, also funded by the parish. It is surrounded by a wooden fence, serving as a burial place for special merits before the church. This church has one altar in honor of the holy martyrs Flora and Lavra. The parish cemetery is located a hundred fathoms from the village and is enclosed by a wooden fence, which has deteriorated over time. The church houses a relief crucifix of Jesus Christ with carved figures, before which believers show reverence by kissing the wounds, but services are not held. The distance to Kostroma is 330 versts, to Vetluga, 110 versts. The nearest churches are Spasskaya in the village of Novospasskoye, 8 versts away, and Bogoroditskaya in the village of Zubovskoye, 16 versts away.
The wooden church burned down in the 1990s.
In the 17th century, the village was part of the Unzhenskaya district of Galich County. In 1628, a church "of Nicholas the Wonderworker and the warm church of the Resurrection of the Lord on Vetluga at Shangskoye Gorodishche" is mentioned. In March 1676, documents were submitted for signature for the Unzhenskaya district of the Vetluga volost of the Bogoroditsky stan of Shangskoye Gorodishche church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker from priest Leontiy Ivanov. In July 1699, by the decree of the holy patriarch and by a signed petition, two antimins were issued to Galich County, to the Vetluga volost, for the Shangskoye Gorodishche church of the Resurrection of the Lord with two altars of the Kazan Mother of God and the Solovki Wonderworkers.
