The Holy Nicholas Church in Sharya was built with the funds of parishioners and consecrated on July 12, 1916. In 1929, the church was closed, and the building underwent reconstruction. Over the years, it housed a club and the 'Severny' cinema. From 1976 to 1991, the building was home to a local history museum. In 1991, the building was returned to the church, and work began on the improvement of the altar area, the installation of iconostases, and the beautification of the territory. Some ancient icons were transferred from the church of the village of Nikolo-Shangi in the Sharya district, while many were brought by parishioners. The construction work was accompanied by worship services. The first divine liturgy, which gathered many parishioners, took place on August 4, 1991, and that same year the first wedding ceremony was held. In 1993, the bells of the Nicholas Church rang out over the city. A choir was formed, a Sunday school opened, and the parish community began to grow. In January 1998, the church suffered from a fire, and only 10 out of 100 icons could be saved. Parishioners who came to the Sunday liturgy saw only charred ruins. The city needed a new church. On July 21, 2004, after the liturgy in memory of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, a cornerstone with a relic of St. Ignatius Bryanchaninov was consecrated at the site of the new church's construction. The stone was laid on August 1, the day of remembrance of St. Seraphim of Sarov. The church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built in 10 months from wood. On the day of the consecration of the new Nicholas Church, May 21, 2005, a rainbow appeared in the sky, although there was no rain, which the residents took as a good sign. Now, next to the church, a two-story building of a refectory has been constructed, where introductory talks are held before baptisms and weddings, as well as theological courses. The classes are conducted by clergy from Sharya with theological education.
