The village of Piya is located 336 versts north of Yekaterinburg and 46 versts south of Verkhoturye. It is situated by a small river, Vytyek, which dries up in summer, and the villages of the parish are spread along the rivers Piya and Kalma. The soil here is clayey, the area is rich in forests, but the climate is unfavorable due to numerous swamps. The reason for settling in this area, which is inconvenient for living, was the abundance of cedar forests, although now they have almost all been cut down.

Until 1865, the residents of this parish belonged to the parish of the village of Salda. However, due to the remoteness and difficulties in communication, especially in spring during the flooding of the rivers Piya and Salda, an independent parish was formed.

In 1864, according to a decree from the Perm Spiritual Consistory, a church was finally established in the village of Bolshaya Piya, and a separate parish was formed, including villages that previously belonged to the Salda parish: Sretenskaya Church, Malaya Piya, Vasileva, Chernova, Taskina, Karpova, Motyreeva, Glazunova, and Volokovaya, with a population of 520 men and 551 women. In 1875, peasants from the villages of Zaplatina, Batrakova, and Yuri were temporarily added to the parish, but they soon returned to the Salda parish. The Piya parish got its name from the river Piya, which flows 4 versts from it. All parishioners are Russian Orthodox Christians. Currently, the parish has 1775 members, including 873 men and 902 women. The main occupations of the parishioners are woodcutting and coal preparation, which forces them to go into the forests for the entire autumn. They also engage in making washcloths, mats, sieves, and baskets, collecting pine nuts, and a bit of farming.

Before the church was built, there was a wooden chapel with a bell tower in the village of Piya, built in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by the decree of Metropolitan Philotheus of Tobolsk and Siberia on March 24, 1702. During the construction of the church, the chapel was dismantled, the icons were transferred to the church, and the old and dilapidated ones were moved to the storeroom. The stone church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker with a bell tower was laid on October 26, 1856, with the blessing of Archbishop Neophyte of Perm and Verkhoturye and was completed in 1863.

For a long time, the dilapidated church in the center of the village stood empty, creating a sad impression. It was visible from the village streets and roads leading to the village. Now the Holy Nicholas community of Piya has been revived, as has a full-fledged worship life. The village church is gradually regaining its former appearance. The rector, Priest Vasily Pitomtsev, reported that the restoration of the church is nearing completion, with only a small part of the finishing and roofing work left to be done.

On Easter 2009, the first Divine Liturgy in 77 years was held in the restored Holy Nicholas parish. Now services are held regularly here, which does not interfere with the completion of restoration work.
