On the 55th anniversary of Valentina Tereshkova's flight into space, a new church was consecrated in the village of Nikulskoye in the Yaroslavl region, built thanks to the first woman cosmonaut.

The village of Bolshoye Maslennikovo, where the future Seagull, the call sign of Tereshkova during her flight, was born, is located one and a half kilometers from Nikulskoye. The house where the space heroine lived has not survived, so a museum dedicated to her and other space flights was opened in 1975 in the nearest settlement on the Yaroslavl-Uglich highway.

At the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the flight on the Vostok-6 spacecraft, Valentina Tereshkova announced her intention to build a church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Nikulskoye, as there had never been a church there. At that time, a cross was consecrated at the future construction site.

It took three years for approvals, and the construction took less than two years. On June 16, 2018, Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsky and Kolomna consecrated the memorial church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the homeland of Valentina Tereshkova in the village of Nikulskoye. The church was built with funds from patrons and friends of Valentina Vladimirovna. Tereshkova herself contributed at least 1 million rubles to the construction. The exterior of the church resembles a rocket soaring upwards, like on a launch pad.
