The village of Nikolo-Pavlovsk, also known as Shaitanka, is located 10 versts from the Lower Tagil plant on the Shaitanka River, which flows into the Tagil River, and is 212 versts from Yekaterinburg. It covers an area of 5.5 square versts and is owned by the Demidov factory owners. The area around the village is elevated and mountainous, covered with coniferous forests.

The village was named Pavlovsk in honor of its owner Pavel Nikolaevich Demidov, who founded the settlement here. In 1872, after the construction of a church in honor of St. Nicholas, the settlement began to be called Nikolo-Pavlovsk.

Until the 1820s, this area was a forest wilderness where dissenters and fugitives from the authorities hid. In the 1830s, the Demidovs resettled serfs from the internal provinces of Russia here, which marked the beginning of the village and parish. The settlers were suddenly taken from their homeland and upon arrival received housing and necessary household items.

The villagers engage in mining work and crafts such as blacksmithing, shoemaking, sheepskin processing, and butter-making. There are 15 shops in the village. All residents, Russian Orthodox, number 4000 in the parish, of which 10 are dissenters.

Before the church was built in 1872, the residents fulfilled their religious duties at the Lower Tagil and Chornoistochinsk plants, and since 1839, in the Voskresensk village. However, with the growth of the population and difficulties in communication, the need for a church of their own arose. In 1871, the residents appealed to the diocesan authorities with a request to build a church, and their request was granted.

By the blessing of Archbishop Anthony of Perm and Verkhoturye, the church was laid in September 1871. It was built from materials provided by the Demidovs and cost the community 2500 rubles. The church was consecrated on December 3, 1872, but burned down in 1883. After the fire, the church was restored and re-consecrated on March 25, 1883.

The residents planned the construction of a new stone church, which was laid on September 1, 1886. The construction cost 33 thousand rubles and was funded by the community. In 1893, the main altar was consecrated, and in 1895, two chapels. In 1901, the church was renovated and surrounded by a stone fence. The clergy of the church consists of a priest, a deacon, and a psalmist. The village has a women's literacy school opened in 1898 and a mixed zemstvo school opened in 1872.
