Lopatino is a village in the Sergachsky district, known for its architectural monument, the Nikolskaya Church, dated 1887 and under state protection (document No. 471).
According to the revision tales of 1782, Lopatino belonged to the late captain-lieutenant of the Life Guards, Vasily Ivanovich Brekhov, his widow, and daughter. At that time, the village had 180 men and 186 women. Part of the village was owned by sergeant of the Life Guards Semenovsky Regiment, Pyotr Andreyevich Ostafyev, who had 48 men and 40 women.
In 1788, Lopatino was divided between Anna Fyodorovna Obrezkova, the daughter of Yermolov, and ensign Andrey Petrovich Ostafyev. After Anna's death, her estate passed to her son, General-anshef Alexander Vasilyevich Obrezkov, and then to his son Pyotr, who sold the land and peasants in 1812 to Ekaterina Petrovna Tolstaya, the daughter of second-major Pyotr Andreyevich Ostafyev. Thus, the village became the property of one landowner. In 1845, she transferred the lands and peasants as a dowry for her daughter Alexandra Pavlovna, who married Prince Ivan Mikhailovich Vadbolsky. Later, he transferred them to his daughter Bakashina, who sold them to merchant Karavanov, the last owner of the village. In the year of the liberation of peasants from serfdom, A.P. Vadbolskaya provided the peasants with the best plots of land.
The old church in the village was used for services until 1795, when a new wooden church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built with the funds of landowners Obrezkov and Ostafyev. The old church was located four fathoms from the new one, but its fate is unknown. In 1825, the church was sheathed with boards, re-roofed, and a bell tower 12 m 80 cm high was built. In 1846, Princess A.P. Vadbolskaya renovated the facades, domes, and cupolas of the church. In 1859, staff captain Memnon Petrovich Shcherbakov made the church "warm," and Arzamas carvers decorated the iconostasis.
After the reform of 1861, landowners stopped caring for the church, and the peasants had no means for its repair. In 1881, architect Neyman took on the project of a new stone church but did not complete it. In 1882, construction was entrusted to Yakov Vasilyevich Voinov, who began making bricks. However, the construction was delayed, and in 1887 the church was rebuilt according to the project of engineer Stankevich, approved in 1886. The new church almost repeated the layout of the old one built in 1795.
Today, the church is active and located in the center of the village.
