The Nikolaev church in the village of Nikolskoye Shuda was made of stone, with a bell tower of the same material, and was built in 1840 thanks to the efforts of the parishioners. The fence around the church was also made of stone. The cemetery was located 12 fathoms from the church and was surrounded by a wooden fence, with a wooden chapel on its territory. The church had three altars: in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the prophet Elijah, and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The distance to Kostroma was 350 versts, and to Varnavino, 35 versts. The nearest churches were in the village of Reshetikha, the Assumption Church 8 versts away, and in the village of Timarikh, the Ilyinsky Church, as well as the Nikolaev Church on the Lapshanga River, 23 versts away.

The temple was lost in the mid-1970s, and in the 1990s a new wooden church was built in its place in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

In the 17th century, the village was part of the Unzhenskaya siege of the Galich district. In 1628, a church "of Nicholas the Wonderworker on the Vetluga on Shuda" is mentioned.

In October 1711, Ivan Petrov Matyushkin wrote to the patriarchal treasury: "In the past 1710 year, by order and at my request, it was commanded to build in my estate in the Galich district in the Vetluga volost in the village of Nikolskoye, which is on Shuda, a new church of God on the old cemetery in the name of the Kazan Most Holy Mother of God with two chapels, of the prophet Elijah and Nicholas the Wonderworker. These chapels have been built and are ready for consecration, but the main church of the Kazan Most Holy Mother of God is not completed. I ask you to command the consecration of the chapels of the prophet Elijah and Nicholas the Wonderworker and to issue holy antimins for them."
