Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Korcovo

Фото 1
An example of a provincial church in the style of late classicism, which stands out with its monumental forms and proportionally expressive silhouette. Although construction lasted nearly thirty years, the building did not escape the influence of eclecticism, which is evident in the finishing of the facades of the refectory and partially the porch, completed in the second half of the 19th century. The building has a symmetrical axial composition, dominated by a four-columned five-domed square of the church. To the east, it is adjoined by a lower and narrower semicircular apse, and to the west, a two-altar refectory with the altars of Macarius of Unzha and John the Baptist, which is only slightly narrower than the square, and a small porch. The western facade of the porch has been altered by a narthex from the early 20th century, which poorly matches the original architecture. The dominant role of the church volume is emphasized by its completion with a dome light rotunda with a quadrangular drum topped with a cross on a gilded apple, and smaller quadrangular tower-like drums with similar crosses.

The side facades of the square are adorned with six-columned Tuscan porticos on podiums, finished with low stepped pediments. The vertical axes of the facades are highlighted by door openings and large semicircular windows of the second light. Half-columns of the Tuscan order are used in the decoration of the facades of the apse and porch, as well as the rotunda and corner drums. A unified principle of decoration is traced throughout all parts of the church; however, the eclectic finishing of the refectory disrupts the compositional integrity. The central parts of the side facades of the refectory with five windows are designed with large rectangular niches, uniting the three central windows with unexpressive pilasters in the intercolumniations. In accordance with the Empire style, the high arched openings on the rotunda and corner drums of the church, as well as on the apse, do not have casings. The arched windows of the refectory and porch are framed with brick casings with profiled archivolts resting on pilasters, which was common during the period of eclecticism. The decoration of the building is complemented by wide friezes of several types: on the square of the church and the apse with triglyph-metope friezes, on the refectory and porch with cornices, supplemented with brackets.
