In the village of Danilovo, Kiyasovsky District of Udmurtia, one of the most unusual Orthodox churches in the region is located, the church of the icon of Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Savior Not Made by Hands. According to local legends, the church was built in memory of the Patriotic War of 1812, possibly with the participation of captured French soldiers.

The first wooden Nicholas church appeared here in 1722, and the village was named "Nikolskoe," but it was later renamed in honor of the first settler Danila. In 1767, the church was renovated, adding an altar in honor of St. Paraskeva Friday. In 1774, near the new church, Emelyan Pugachev ordered the hanging of the local priest Pokryshkin.

In 1807, the church burned down, and three years later it was partially restored. In 1812, permission was obtained to build a stone church, which was completed by 1820. The main altar was consecrated on July 11, while the Nicholas altar was consecrated five years earlier. There is no documentary evidence of the participation of captured French soldiers in the construction, although they worked on other churches in the Sarapul district. The legend of the French may have arisen due to the unusual architectural style of the building.

The church was designed by Pyotr Ankidinovich Anisimov, a protodeacon from Sarapul, known for his many talents. He supervised the lives of the captured French and designed churches, assisted by his brother Mikhail and architect Semyon Dudin. Materials for the construction of the church were prepared for more than three years. The Danilovo priest Ivan Krasnoperov wrote that the church plan was created at the request of local residents.

In 1847, the church was adorned with wall paintings, including on the bell tower, where a scene dedicated to the events of 1812-1814 was depicted. The first bells were made at the Bakulev factory, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the largest bell weighing 150 poods was made at the M.I. Ryabinin factory. The church actively engaged in charity: in 1840, a school was opened, and in 1868, a church parish guardianship.

In the late 1930s, the church became deserted due to repressions. In 1939, the bell was thrown down and taken to Agryz. In December of the same year, under pressure from the authorities, a decision was made to close the church. In 1941, it was planned to convert it into a school, but this proved impossible. The building was used as a warehouse, but sometimes services were held there. In 1946, the church was reopened, but closed again 15 years later.

In 1990, restoration work began, involving local authorities and enthusiasts such as Anatoly Yakovlevich Lipin. The first rector was Viktor Grigoryevich Kostenkov. Restoration has been ongoing for 13 years with the participation of the design organization "Anfilada" from Kirov, while adhering to all details to restore the former beauty of the church.
