St. Nicholas Church in Dalmatovo

Фото 1
For almost three centuries, the parish church of St. Nicholas has stood in the center of the city, on a hill at the southern entrance to Dalmatovo. In the mid-17th century, the settlement "Sloboda Sluzhnaya" emerged near the walls of the Dalmatov Monastery, which became the village of Nikolayevskoye in 1691. The first wooden church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built here in 1658, followed by a second one in 1673. With the construction of the church, a parish was formed, including the Sluzhnaya sloboda and surrounding villages. By the mid-18th century, the wooden church had deteriorated and became cramped for the increasing number of parishioners, so it was decided to build a stone church.

The stone St. Nicholas Church was erected on the site of the second wooden church from 1754 to 1763 with funds from parishioners and monastery peasants. However, soon the unheated stone church ceased to satisfy the believers. From 1770 to 1776, a heated northern chapel was added on the north side in honor of the Three Hierarchs: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom.

In the mid-19th century, the question of expanding the church arose again, and from 1858 to 1860, a chapel was added on the south side in honor of St. Dimitri, Metropolitan of Rostov, along with a refectory, porches, and a narthex.

The final construction of the St. Nicholas Church was completed in June 1822. A brick fence was built around the church, inside which was a cemetery for clergy and their families. In this cemetery, 20 meters from the eastern gate, next to her husband, priest Nikifor Cheremukhin, lies buried Pavla Ioasafovna Cheremukhina, the founder of the first school for girls and the matriarch of a dynasty of teachers with a combined experience of over a thousand years.

During the Civil War in 1918, priests Vladimir Sergeev and Alexander Sidorov, as well as deacon Vasily Sitnikov, died a martyr's death. Former Red Army soldier A.N. Gryaznykh recalled how, preparing to meet the White Guards, they noticed enemy cavalry reconnaissance and a chain of opponents. Suddenly, the ringing of bells broke the silence, warning of danger. This was a signal arranged by the priests, who sacrificed themselves to save others. Soon the ringing was silenced by gunfire, and the priests were captured. Sergeev and Sidorov were shot on the spot, while Sitnikov was killed on the way to the village of Katayskoye.

By the decision of the Holy Synod on July 17, 2002, these holy martyrs were canonized in the Council of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. The city of Dalmatovo gained special intercessors in them.

In 1934, the church was closed by the Soviet authorities, and its appearance changed: the bell tower, domes, and fence were dismantled. During the Soviet era, the building was used as a cinema, a House of Culture, a sports school, warehouses, a library, and a fluorography room. From 1980 to 2012, the building housed a local history museum.

In the 1950s, the St. Nicholas Church became the subject of study as a monument of 18th-century architecture. In 1960, it was declared a monument of republican significance. In the early 1980s, scientists from the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute conducted research, creating plans and descriptions of the building. The St. Nicholas Church is valued for its decor, executed in the traditions of Ural architecture of the 18th century. The interior decoration of the church has almost not survived, but in the southern chapel, medallions and an image of the Apostle Paul have been restored.

Currently, the building has been transferred to the Shadrinsk Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. Akathists to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker are read in the southern chapel. The life of the church continues, and there is a great deal of work ahead for the restoration of the temple, the renovation of the facades and interiors, and the restoration of the bell tower and five domes. Pilgrimage and tourist routes have long led to the walls of the Dalmatov Monastery. We hope that soon the St. Nicholas Church, the first stone parish church of the Shadrinsk district, will be restored.
