The Orthodox community of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the first in the modern history of Chapayevsk, was registered in 1987. A year later, construction of a prayer house began on a designated plot on Zhukovsky Street. In 1992, a significant piece of land was transferred to the community for the construction of a full-fledged church. The construction, which involved a major reconstruction of an existing building, was mostly completed by 2001. In 2008, Bishop Sergey of Samara and Syzran conducted the great consecration of the church. In everyday language, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is often referred to as a cathedral, although there are no formal grounds for this, as it has never housed the cathedra of either the Samara or Kinel bishops.
