The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Bolshoye Shirokoye, Shakhunsky District, is recognized as a monument of architecture. It was originally built of wood in 1865 with funds from parishioners. In 1912, according to the design of the famous architect V.A. Pokrovsky, the author of the State Bank building in Nizhny Novgorod, the church was reconstructed in stone. The architecture is executed in the Russian national style. In the early 2000s, the church was restored.

The church has the shape of a slightly elongated cross, with a porch on the extended part. The transverse wings serve as portals, and the altar part is located at the upper part of the cross. The vertical structure of the church is designed in the traditional scheme of ancient Russian architecture: an octagon on a square base, on a massive cubic foundation. Three octagons of the central structure are placed on the cube. The corners of the cube are adorned with four bell towers with arcades under tent roofs. The architectural appearance of the church is created by the transition from the massive forms of the square to the light octagons. When viewed from below, the massive brick forms of the base are replaced by light arched openings, which continue into the slender pyramids of the tent roofs and thin drums. The crosses at the tops seem to continue this movement into the spiritual space. The massive structures of the church harmoniously blend with the surrounding nature, creating a cohesive architectural and artistic image that enriches the spiritual world of a person. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Bolshoye Shirokoye is rightfully included in the list of significant architectural monuments.
