The Church of St. Nicholas in Vspolye was built in 1813 in the classical style on the site of an old wooden Nicholas church that belonged to the ancient Sretensky Monastery. In 1816, the interior of the temple was adorned with glue painting by Ivan Mikhailovich Gladkov, a servant of the Rostov archbishopric. The narrative medallions, executed on a light blue background, are richly decorated with grape clusters in the grisaille technique. In the 1890s, some parts of the frescoes were repainted with oil paint, which changed the iconography of most medallions. At the same time, the refectory was decorated with oil painting. The dome depicts the New Testament Trinity surrounded by angels. Among the scenes, one can see Saints Leonty and Jacob of Rostov, Ignatius and Isaiah of Rostov. The three-tiered carved iconostasis, adorned with grape clusters, is topped with a sculptural group of the Crucifixion. The iconostasis was created in 1811-1812 by the carver Pyotr Yakovlevich Pavlov and was gilded in 1814 by Dmitry Alekseevich Klochkova from the Bogoyavlenskaya sloboda. The icons of the upper tiers of the iconostasis were painted in 1814 by Stepan Petrovich Basov, who also restored the ancient icons of the local tier: the Life-Giving Spring, the Smolensk Mother of God, and the Prophet Elijah in his life. In the Deesis tier, the icon of the Savior on the throne, placed in 1595 in the wooden Nicholas church by the Rostov merchant Siluyan Krasin and his family, has been preserved. To the right, in a separate niche, there is an ancient temple image of Nicholas in his life with 22 medallions from the 16th century. In the refectory, there is a temple icon of the Meeting from the 16th century. Among the most important relics of the church are the icon of St. Barbara in her life in a chased silver setting from the 18th century, the Annunciation icons from the Rostov Annunciation church, and the Transfer of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker from the church of Nicholas on the Ferry near Rostov.
