The Nikolskaya gate church is a rectangular brick building with two floors and a gallery. It is located along the Kremlin wall. The first floor has a wide opening for passage and two narrow entrances on the sides, which were later bricked up. A two-flight stone staircase leads to the building from Oktyabrskaya Square.

The church was built between 1729 and 1738. The corners of the building are adorned with pilasters, the frieze has profiled niches, and the crowning cornice features a multi-tiered decorative edge. The windows have arched lintels and ornate grilles, framed by rectangular moldings. On the western facade, there are two paired arched windows with semicircular lintels and archivolts. A gallery surrounds the building.

The roof of the central nave is hipped, covered with tiles, some of which are missing. The eastern facade has a single-pitched roof, also covered with tiles. The building features three domes with copper coverings and gilded crosses.

In 2014-2015, preservation work was carried out on the site. This included the restoration of the brickwork of the facades, finishing of the facades, restoration of the brickwork and finishing of the walls of the arched passage, as well as the restoration of the entrance group from the northern facade and the gates.
