Not far from the famous sports complex "Olympic" lies an ancient temple dedicated to the martyr Metropolitan Philip, in the Meshchanskaya Sloboda. It was built in 1691.

The location for the church was chosen for a reason. The road here existed long before the name Prospect Mira appeared. Prince Yuri Dolgoruky traveled along it before the founding of Moscow, ordering the construction of a fortress that became the predecessor of the capital. Later, Ivan the Terrible returned to Moscow along this road, as did the future Tsar Mikhail Romanov, who was met at the walls of the Sretensky Monastery.

This road is also known for the transfer of the relics of Metropolitan Philip from Tver to Moscow in 1652 by order of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov. In honor of this event, a commemorative cross was erected on July 6 of the same year, and 25 years later, in 1677, the first wooden church was built. In 1689, it was dismantled due to its dilapidated state.

In 1691, a stone church was erected on the site of the wooden one. In 1787-1788, architects Kazakov and Bazhenov reconstructed it, giving the temple a modern appearance. The Church of Saint Philip is unique in that it is the only joint work of Kazakov and Bazhenov. In other cases, one of them reconstructed the work of the other, but there were no more joint projects.
