The first mentions of a wooden church in the Sorochinsk fortress, dedicated to the Nativity of Christ, appear in the Clerical Record of 1854. The document states that the Nativity church was built in 1788 through the efforts of priest Georgy Gavrilov and retired Cossack Mikhail Kolosov. The church was wooden, with a bell tower and one altar.

In 1859, the construction of a new Church of Archangel Michael with an altar in honor of Saint Mitrophan of Voronezh was completed. However, on April 27, 1860, both churches, old and new, burned down in a fire that destroyed a large part of the village, including about 300 households. From 1866 to 1872, a new wooden church with a bell tower in honor of Archangel Michael was built in the village, with two altars: the right in honor of Saint Nicholas and the left in honor of Saint Mitrophan of Voronezh.

In 1883, the villagers requested a plan for a stone church in honor of the Kazan Mother of God, designed for 1200 people. The construction of the Kazan church took place from 1884 to 1889 under the supervision of the Diocesan architect Inozemtsev. On December 20, 1892, the church was consecrated by Bishop Samarsky Guriy and became a subsidiary of the Church of Archangel Michael.

On July 23, 1899, the wooden church of Archangel Michael burned down after repairs. On August 12 of the same year, the church clergy and the elder appealed to Bishop Guriy for permission to build a new stone church on the site of the burned one. Bishop Guriy laid a cross at the future church site and placed holy relics in the stone. By the fall of 1905, construction was completed, and the church was covered with iron, painted on the outside, and equipped with a stove.

On February 18, 1907, the right altar in honor of Saint Nicholas was consecrated, and on September 12, 1910, the left altar in honor of Saint Mitrophan of Voronezh. The main altar was consecrated presumably at the end of 1911, and the first service took place on November 21 of the same year.

In 1918, the new authorities prohibited church services, clergy were repressed, and the Kazan Mother of God church was destroyed. In 1920-1921, the confiscation of church valuables began, affecting the Church of Archangel Michael as well. The church operated for about twenty years and was closed in 1930-1931, with partial dismantling starting.

On May 16, 1945, Sorochinsk was granted city status, creating a need for a church. A house was purchased with donations, which the parishioners converted for services and consecrated in honor of Archangel Michael. On March 26, 1946, Metropolitan Manuel Lemeshevsky arrived in Sorochinsk to consecrate the prayer house.

By the late 1980s, the city’s House of Culture, located in the dilapidated Church of Archangel Michael, ceased to exist. On December 27, 1990, the church building, which was in an emergency state, was transferred to the believers by the decision of the Sorochinsk City Council of People's Deputies.
