The Church of Archangel Michael is located at the highest point of the village of Shoksha, on the southern hill. The church has three altars: one at the bottom in honor of Saint Nicholas, and two at the top, dedicated to Archangel Michael and the martyrs Flora and Lavra.

The stone two-story Nicholas church was built in 1830 with funds from parishioners in the style of late classicism and Empire. From 1905 to 1915, the construction of chapels on both sides of the church was carried out. In 1975, this architectural monument was documented.

Nearby is the village cemetery, where the height of the wooden crosses reaches 6 meters. Such tall grave crosses are not found anywhere else in Mordovia. This custom, partly reminiscent of the traditions of ancient Egyptians, inspired the Mordovian landscape painter V. Bedny to create the painting "Day of Remembrance."

In the Church of Archangel Michael in the village of Shoksha, there are various icons, among which the most notable are "Lord Almighty," "Compassion," and "Archangel Michael." According to parishioners, these are the main icons for the church. The altar icon is considered to be "Joy of All Who Sorrow."

In addition to these, the church has many other icons, such as the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Fragrant Flower, the Icon of the Mother of God "Bogolyubskaya," the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple, the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary "Look Upon Humility," the icon of the Mother of God "Sovereign," "Sign," "Queen of All," Comfort in Sorrows, the Life-Giving Spring, the icon of the Mother of God "Iverskaya," "Kazan," "The Watchful Eye," "The Unquenchable Cup," "The Indestructible Wall," "The Burning Bush," "The Unfading Flower," "Unexpected Joy," "Giver of Mind," "Praise of the Mother of God," "Intercessor for Sinners," "Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos," the icon of "Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker," "Saint Sergius of Radonezh," and many others. Each of them possesses its own miraculous power.

Over its 180 years of existence, the Shoksha church has changed its appearance, parishioners, and even its name. Initially, it was called Nicholas, then in the 1975 monument passport, it was referred to as Nikolskaya. After its reopening in 2000, it became the Church of Archangel Michael.

The number of parishioners has significantly decreased: in 1911, the parish included 2,450 residents of Shoksha, 845 from the village of Ryazanka, and 278 from Lipleyka. Now, 516 people live in Shoksha, and almost no population remains in the villages of Ryazanka and Lipleyka.

Despite changes in the number of parishioners and its name, the church must continue to live, bringing goodness and faith to people. The Church of Archangel Michael still remains a symbol of the village and its calling card, majestically and hospitably welcoming guests to Shoksha.
