The construction of the brick church in the village of Mordovo began in the second half of the 19th century, as the old church could not accommodate all the parishioners. At that time, the village had 1,200 households. The church was completed and consecrated in 1909. This huge building can hold up to 5,000 people and is one of the largest in the Tambov region. Due to the onset of World War I shortly thereafter, the wall paintings in the interior of the church were not completed, as there were not enough funds for the interior finishing. A unique feature of the church is the ceramic iconostasis, brought in 1890 from the New Jerusalem Monastery near Moscow. Such an iconostasis is unique for Russia.

In 1939, the church was closed and used as a grain storage facility. However, local residents did not allow the altar to be used for household purposes, fencing it off. There were plans to blow up the church, but an officer who arrived for an inspection pointed out that the explosion could damage neighboring houses and the school, which saved the church from destruction. During the Great Patriotic War, the building housed a hospital, and for hygienic purposes, the walls were whitewashed with lime, which damaged some icons.

In 1945, the church was returned to the believers when the Tambov diocese was headed by Archbishop Luka Voyno-Yasenetsky. By the 1,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, the building was restored. Currently, the restoration is progressing slowly due to a lack of funds. The rector, Father Anatoly, plans to restore the colorful stained glass windows of the church.

In 1993, Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Russia visited the Archangel Michael Church and held a Divine Liturgy there.
