Kotyakovo, a village in the Karsun district, was previously part of the Gorinskaya volost of the Karsun county in the Simbirsk province. It is located on the right bank of the Sura River, at the confluence of the Gorenka River, 22 km northwest of Karsun and 119 km west of Ulyanovsk, along the highway.

In 2010, the area of the village was 106.5 hectares.

According to legends, the settlement was founded by a native of the village of Nalyotovo, now the village of Nalitovo in the Inza district, a Mordvin named Kotyak, even before the construction of the Simbisk-Karsun defensive line in the mid-17th century and the mass colonization of the region.

By the early 20th century, Kotyakovo had a church, a zemstvo school, several mills, and a pier on the Sura, which shipped up to 160 thousand poods of cargo, mainly grain. Near the village, chalk was mined, which was burned to produce lime.

In the 1930s, the church was closed, its domes and bell tower were removed, and the building was adapted for a rural school. The church, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, was located in the main square of the village, on the edge of the high bank of the Sura, from where there was a magnificent view of the river valley and the surrounding countryside.

The church, set on a brick base, was built in a log cabin style from logs processed on the inside and covered with wooden shingles. The building represented a traditional type of three-part refectory church, consisting of a square temple, a 'four-square', with an apse and a lost bell tower. The upper tiers and finishes of the bell tower and temple, as well as the roof of the refectory, have been lost. The church is now abandoned and rapidly deteriorating. It is recognized as a cultural heritage site.
