Church of Archangel Michael in Gorodishche

Фото 1
The village of Gorodishche was presumably founded in the 1820s by settlers from the Voronezh province. The history of the Archangel Michael church began in 1836 when the residents applied for permission to build a wooden church. After receiving permission, the first wooden church, and possibly a second one, also wooden, were destroyed by fire. In 1880, the construction of the current stone church began, designed by architect K.A. Ton. Clay for the bricks was mined nearby, and the bricks were delivered by hand. The youth, before heading out for evening festivities, had to bring bricks to the building church and stack them neatly. The church was built by the community. In 1892, bells were installed in the bell tower, and the church was consecrated by Bishop Macarius Troitsky of Orenburg and Ural. On April 14, 1931, the church was closed. Two priests and several members of the clergy were repressed. The building was used as a grain storage, workshop, cement warehouse, and then was abandoned. In the 1950s, attempts were made to demolish the church, but it withstood, although it was severely damaged. Restoration began in 1991 through the efforts of residents and benefactors. The bell tower, frescoes, iconostasis were restored, new icons were painted, a hotel for pilgrims was built, and the territory was improved. In 2010, the construction of a wooden chapel and a baptismal font at the holy spring in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Quick to Hear" was completed. After the restoration, the Church of Archangel Michael became known as a place of veneration for the miraculous icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "Quick to Hear." With the beginning of the restoration, the icon returned to the church, and people who turned to it began to receive help in illnesses and strengthening in faith. On Fridays and Sundays, services are held before the icon, gathering residents of the village and believers from Orenburg and neighboring regions. The village of Gorodishche has become an important pilgrimage site in the Orenburg diocese alongside the Nikolsky Cathedral in Orenburg, where the icon is kept by the blessing of Metropolitan Valentin of Orenburg and Saraktash. The Church of Archangel Michael houses relics of many revered saints, such as Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene, Great Martyr Panteleimon, Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, the Optina Elders, and others, each with its own story of appearing in the church.
