The Lazarus Church, named after Lazarus who was resurrected on the fourth day after his death by Jesus Christ, was founded in 1864 as a private church with the icon "The Resurrection of Lazarus." It was located in the city almshouse, intended for the care of the seriously ill and orphans. The well-known Tambov merchant and philanthropist A.M. Nosov built four stone buildings for the almshouse between 1869 and 1872.

The single-domed temple, designed in the classical style, had a modest exterior and interior decoration. Its main facade was adorned with pilasters and a triangular pediment. Before the arrival of Soviet power, the almshouse and church were funded by the interest from the capital that Nosov wisely invested in the city bank. With the establishment of Soviet power, the almshouse housed various institutions over time, including a retirement home, a hospital, a pharmacy, and others. In the 1990s, the building was returned to the believers.

Today, the church is operational, and a Sunday school is functioning alongside it. In the future, there are plans to build a tiered bell tower next to the church, while various organizations, shops, and residential apartments currently occupy the former almshouse buildings.
