The church in honor of the venerable Cornelius of Komel was built in 2002. In the early 1990s, near the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Gryazovets, with the blessing of Archbishop Maximilian of Vologda and Veliky Ustyug, it was decided to construct a Baptismal house and a church shop. Archpriest Alexander Kulchinsky laid the foundation, but due to a lack of funds, construction was halted. In 1997, an entrepreneur from Izhevsk, Alexander Pavlovich Stolyarov, a native of Gryazovets, became interested in the project. He decided to help and ultimately took on the leadership and financing of the construction. After meeting with Bishop Maximilian, Alexander Pavlovich received a blessing to build a full-fledged church instead of the Baptismal house and shop, as the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross needed reconstruction.

Construction work resumed in 1997 and was completed in 2002. On August 10, 2002, Bishop Maximilian consecrated the church in honor of the venerable Cornelius of Komel, the Vologda miracle worker, as nearby, five kilometers from Gryazovets, was the now-destroyed men's monastery founded by Venerable Cornelius, from which the history of the city began. The consecration was attended by the dean, Archpriest Georgy Ivanov, and local clergy. The church received the status of a dependent church.
