In Tagai, there were two churches: a parish church and a cemetery church. The first, a wooden single-altar church dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, was built in 1651. In 1783, with funds from the parishioners, a new wooden church with the same dedication was constructed at a new location. In 1877, it was renovated and expanded, adding two side chapels: the right in honor of St. Nicholas of Myra and the left in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, transforming it into a three-altar church.

In 1889, construction began on a new stone church at the site of the first church, also funded by parishioners. It was intended to be three-altar, but due to a lack of funds, it was made single-altar. Construction lasted until 1904, and the church was consecrated in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The bell tower was completed only by 1910. The five-domed church with a large bell tower had a bell weighing 250 poods, the sound of which was heard in neighboring villages. The construction was done manually, and instead of cement, eggs were used for the strength of the walls. The old church was dismantled by 1916.

The cemetery church, built in 1792 with funds from merchant Feodor Mikhailovich Syrynsky, was wooden, small, and single-altar, dedicated to the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. Services were held in it 2-3 times a year, and it was renovated in 1879.

In the second half of the 17th century, the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God was brought to Tagai from Smolensk due to an epidemic. At the meeting place of the icon, 1 km from Tagai, a wooden chapel was built, which soon burned down. Around 1704, with funds from Pyotr Ivanovich Muromtsev, a new chapel with a cell for monks from the Simbirsk Protection Monastery was erected. Muromtsev took the icon to the monastery, leaving a copy made in 1734 in Tagai.

In 1936, it was decided to demolish the church, but it could not be done manually, so it was blown up. During the explosion, the bell fell and destroyed the bell tower. An orphanage and school were built from the bricks. Before the explosion, the crosses and icons were removed and placed in the village council, some of which were miraculous.

In the spring of 2009, preparations began for the documentation to build a new church in the village of Tagai in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God at the site of the former church.
