Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Smolkovo

Фото 1
The stone temple in the shape of a rotunda, built in 1809 with funds from the local landowner Pyotr Dmitrievich Samarin, does not have a bell tower. The church had three altars: the main one dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, and in the side chapels, one in honor of the Venerable Anthony and Theodosius, the other, of the Venerable Theodosius of Totma, the miracle worker.

The church was closed during the years of anti-religious persecution, likely in the 1930s. During the Soviet period, the building was used for the economic needs of the local collective farm. In the 1990s, the church was abandoned and fell into disrepair, but since the early 2000s, believers have begun attempts to restore and renovate it.

The stone plastered church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, round in shape, is located on a hill in the center of the village of Smolkovo by a stream. To the east of it stands the wooden church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The facades impress with the precise alignment of the axes of the windows and entrances at different levels. The second light windows are round with eight-part false glazing, while the main windows are rectangular with six-part glazing.

The doors are rectangular, panelled, with diamond-shaped overlays and round rosettes. The northern entrance is decorated with a strict portal with smooth pilasters and shelf-like lintels. The triangular finishes above the entrances have been lost. Above the church rises a bowl-shaped dome on a gently sloping single-pitched round roof covered with iron. It is topped with an octagonal onion dome with a cross on a low drum. At the base of the bowl-shaped dome are four clerestory windows with triangular pediments on the sides. Partially preserved under the cornice with a large overhang is an arcature frieze.

This is an interesting and unique cult architectural monument of the classical era. Inside, the church is supported by eight pillars. Paired stone columns of the Corinthian order, located around the perimeter, support the vault. On the multi-profile cornice under the dome, a frieze has been preserved, and on the shell of the dome, a hook for the chandelier. The spandrels contain figured panels.
