The church was built in 1753 through the efforts of His Grace Leo, Bishop of Voronezh and Yelets. This stone building with a bell tower, also made of stone, is surrounded by an iron fence on stone pillars.

The temple has three altars: the main one is dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the right one to the holy apostle and evangelist John the Theologian, and the left one to Saint John Chrysostom.

Before the 1917 revolution, the parish had two church schools for boys and girls, built in 1898 with funds from parishioners. In 1916, there were 15 boys and 30 girls studying there.

In the 1920s-1930s, Archbishop Alexander Shchukin served at the Kazan Church, who was shot on October 30, 1937. He was canonized at the Jubilee Council in 2000.

Worship services in the church ceased in 1939 due to the lack of a priest. However, at the request of the community of believers, services in the Kazan Church were allowed starting June 14, 1943.

In the late 1940s, Bishop Ioann Kresovich of Lyskov, vicar of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese, served at the Kazan Church, who was the predecessor of the current Bishop Siluan Glazkin.
