The cathedral, built of stone with funds raised from voluntary donations, was constructed in 1791. It has three altars: the main, cold one, is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, while the warm chapels are dedicated to Saint Great Martyr John the Warrior and the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The cathedral includes two subsidiary churches: an urban one dedicated to Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk and a cemetery church.

The first of these churches, also made of stone and without a bell tower, was renovated in 1863 by merchant Ivan Makarov Razdyakonov. It has two altars: the main, cold one, in honor of Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk, and the warm chapel in honor of Saint Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica. The cemetery church, made of wood and also without a bell tower, was originally built in 1688 by an unknown master. In 1862, merchant I. M. Razdyakonov renovated it and moved it from the city to the cemetery; the altar in this church is dedicated to the Life-Giving Trinity.
