Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Karaule

Фото 1
The church is located on an elevated part of the village, on its central street, and harmoniously fits into the picturesque landscape of the Kosa River floodplain. The oldest part of the temple was built in the late 18th century according to the design of F. M. Roslyakov. Permission to construct a brick church instead of the old wooden one was obtained on June 1, 1790. The southern chapel of the warm church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was consecrated first on October 23, 1800. The main altar in the name of the Kazan Mother of God was consecrated on October 17, 1808, and the northern chapel, dedicated to Metropolitan Philip of Moscow, was consecrated on September 16, 1837. The brick walls of the church were partially plastered and whitewashed with lime mortar, but over time the facade finishing has significantly weathered. Although the volumetric forms of the church have mostly been preserved, the interior decoration and some details of the interior have been completely lost.

The temple has an elongated east-west volumetric composition, including the church itself, the refectory, rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the bell tower, connected to the church by a covered corridor. The architectural forms of the church, transitioning from Baroque to Classicism, are characteristic of rural churches in the Vyatka province of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The bell tower, styled in late Classicism and eclecticism, harmoniously blends with the church. The refectory and the transition-vestibule are organically integrated into the overall complex, enlivening the facades with two-column porticos of the side portals. The two-light square is topped with an oval roof with diagonal troughs, and above it rise two successively decreasing squares. To the east, the square is adjoined by the altar apse with a rare horseshoe shape. On the western side is the refectory, covered with a gable roof. The slope of the site allowed the refectory to be two-level. The four-tiered bell tower was originally located on the longitudinal axis of the church. The upper tiers of the bell tower are square, while the lower tier has an arch for passage to the temple. The bell tower is topped with a spire on an octagonal pedestal.

The facades of the church are decorated with rectangular panels and two-tiered locks. The cornices are adorned with a series of small dentils. The divisions of the facades of the altar, refectory, and transition are executed in a unified style. The facades of the bell tower feature a clear pattern and regular arches. The decorative treatment of the walls includes pilasters, strips, and entablatures with a simple profile. The interior space of the church is divided into summer and winter parts. The prayer hall is covered with a high vault with lucarnes. The apse has a conch of irregular shape. The refectory is connected to the church through an arched corridor and is covered with a vault on three walls. The western part of the refectory was rebuilt, and a basement with utility rooms appeared beneath it. The main entrance to the church is arranged through an arch and stair flights at the base of the bell tower.
