The village of Bykov Otróg was founded in 1748 by settlers from the Volsky district, who were relocated to the left bank of the Volga due to a lack of land. In 1783, the locals built the first wooden Orthodox church with a bell tower and altar in honor of the Kazan Mother of God. Its clergy included a priest, a deacon, a church clerk, and a sexton, who lived in wooden houses on communal land. By 1836, the village had 120 households with 560 men and 575 women. About 10% of the population adhered to Old Believer traditions, while the rest were Orthodox. According to the 1859 census, there were 159 households in the village with 612 men and 665 women.

In 1870, a new wooden church with a bell tower was built, which, unlike the previous one, was warm. It had a priest and a psalmist, for whom wooden houses were also constructed. In 1892, a literacy school opened in the church watchman's house, and ten years later, a women's parish school was established. In 1904, due to the dilapidation of the second church, it was scheduled for demolition. At that time, a project for a new Kazan church for 1,600 parishioners was developed, which was built in 1905 under the guidance of architect T. S. Khilinsky. The new church was wooden on a stone foundation with a bell tower and an iron roof. The clergy included a priest and a psalmist, as well as a prosphora baker, who rented an apartment. The parish included the settlement of Novo-Nikolaevsky. Among the Old Believers, the Pomor and the Beglopopov communities predominated, while the Austrian sect was less represented.

From 1914, the male and female parish schools were merged into one mixed school with a four-year course to evenly distribute students between the two teachers. That same year, a zemstvo school opened in a rented apartment, where in 1915, 28 boys and 31 girls were educated.

The Kazan church was closed and destroyed during the years of religious persecution.
