The village of Bogorodsk was called Bebirino in the 17th century. It received its new name due to the church built here in the late 17th century. The old name is connected to the abundance of beaver runs in this area. A river flows under the village, which was referred to as "Bebir" or "Bebirinsky ravine" in directories until the 19th century.

The first church is mentioned in the second half of the 17th century. In the lists of churches in Povetluzhye from 1672, there is a record of "The Church of the Appearance of the Kazan Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos in the estate of the chamberlain Stepan, son of Prince Ivan Tataev" in the village of Bebirino. Russian settlers who arrived at the Vetluga brought with them the skills of construction, both for churches and for residential and economic buildings. The basis of these structures was a simple log cabin design, consisting of crowns cut at the corner, paw, or lock. They had the shape of a square cell with a gable roof. Such buildings were called cell buildings. The first churches, as architectural monuments, were small wooden cell buildings. A cylindrical barrel was erected on the gable roof, topped with a dome covered with aspen planks and crowned with a wooden cross. An altar was attached to the church, also with a dome and cross, and a bright refectory with a porch was built, with bells hung near the church. The 17th-century churches have not survived; new and more advanced ones were built in their place in the 18th century. The church in the village of Bebirino has survived to this day. It was built in the cell style, but a small octagon with a cylinder, dome, and cross was added on top. In 1840, a stone church was built next to the wooden church by the spiritual administration. According to data from 1863, the Bogorodsk church belonged to the 5th category. It had: 1 priest, a deacon, a subdeacon, and a sexton. By the early 20th century, there were already 2 priests, a deacon, a subdeacon, and a sexton serving in the church. There was a church cemetery. The church buildings and cemetery parks were enclosed with a beautiful, intricately crafted metal fence. Monastic women served in the Bogorodsk church.
