Church of John Chrysostom in Godenovo

On the vast map of Russia, a small village is lost. Passing by, a driver in a hurry may not notice the church standing on the wasteland, unaware of its significance. The history of this place is linked to the miraculous appearance of the Cross. The chronicler mentions the year 1423, May 29, when an unusual event occurred at the Nikolsky burial site, where shepherds were grazing cattle. Suddenly, they saw a pillar of light emanating from an inaccessible place surrounded by swamps. The shepherds, crossing themselves, went towards the light and discovered the Cross with the crucified Savior and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker standing nearby with the Gospel. Hearing a voice promising God's grace and healing, the shepherds reported the miracle. The Orthodox residents gathered a delegation to obtain the bishop's blessing for the construction of a church. Permission was granted: the church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, and the chapel to the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord.

During the construction of the church, miracles occurred. Although it was initially planned to be built not on the swamp, construction was unsuccessful, and it was decided to build at the Nikolsky burial site. The day before the laying of the first stone, a stream of water cleared the site of swamp muck. A sturdy oak church was built, and the revealed Cross was installed in it. However, the church burned down, and the residents tried to save the Cross, but it remained in place. After the fire, the Cross was found unharmed, which brought joy. The construction of a new church began, where the miraculous image of the Crucifixion of Christ was placed to the right of the Royal Gates, and the icon of Saint Nicholas was placed to the left. Healings from the Cross began even in the first church, but records of them were lost in the fire.

The wooden church existed until 1776, after which a stone one was built. The Cross attracted pilgrims from all over Russia. However, during the years of persecution, the church was desecrated, and the icon of Saint Nicholas disappeared. Now the Life-Giving Lord's Cross is located in the church of Saint John Chrysostom in Godenovo, a dependency of the Holy Nicholas Pereslavl Women's Monastery.
