Church of John Climacus at the Holy Trinity Nikolsky Monastery in Gorokhovets

Фото 1
The Church of John Climacus, part of the Nikolsky-Trinity Monastery, was built in 1710 with funds from a wealthy merchant from Gorokhovets, Ivan Shiryayev. Although the exact date of its construction has not been preserved in chronicles, most scholars believe that the church was built no later than the 18th century. The first mentions of it date back to 1761, as indicated in the monastery's inventory. In 1850, the lower section, intended for the superiors, was rebuilt. The church is a two-story brick building of rectangular shape with several apses on a rectangular base. Inside, there is a refectory, the church itself, and a porch, with the ceiling designed as a vaulted arch. A staircase on arches and a porch leading to the second floor are attached to the southwest side of the building. The bases of the columns and the parapets of the stairs are decorated with tiles. The altar and the refectory have the same height, but the main volume is taller. The corners of the walls are adorned with pilasters, and the windows are small, with frames resembling half-columns. A wide crenellated cornice separates a row of kokoshniks that encircle the upper part of the main volume. The main volume is covered with a four-pitched roof, while the refectory and altar have a three-pitched roof. The height of the main volume is 11.5 m, while that of the refectory and altar is 8 m. Next to the church is a two-story superior's house with a rectangular layout and a four-pitched metal roof. The facades of the church are decorated with pilasters, and the floors are separated by horizontal beams. The windows are simple, rectangular, and without decoration. The interior has been altered for residential needs: the floors are wooden, the doors are modern, there are no grilles on the windows, and the ceilings are plastered and whitewashed. The facades are whitewashed on the outside, and the roof is brown metal. The vaulted ceilings are partially damaged, but they have been preserved in some rooms of the superior's house. The stairs are wooden, and heating is provided by stoves. There is no base, and the foundation is not visible. The church's domes have been lost. The windows inside open into deep niches. There is a passage with a barrel vault between the building and the church, which is also present in the apse of the second floor. The superior's house is made of brick with lime mortar. The Church of John Climacus, an important part of the ensemble of the Nikolsky-Trinity Monastery, is located on a high hill at the entrance to the city. It has become a symbol of the combination of residential and cult buildings of the 18th century. The grand porch corresponds to the traditions of 17th-century architecture, but the facade decoration has largely been lost, and the internal layout has changed.
