Church of the Prophet Elijah in Veretye

Фото 1
The warm winter church of the Prophet Elijah, built in 1809, impresses with its simplicity and monumentality. It is characterized by stylistic unity and represents a large structure of the non-aisled type. The side naves were added later, but this did not disrupt its volumetric integrity. The church is devoid of provincial triviality. The portico of the main entrance, the wooden rustication of the corners, the clear rhythm of the windows with a restrained profile, and a row of metopes under the cornice form a concise and monumental appearance reminiscent of the works of the outstanding Russian architect of the early classicism era, I.E. Starov.

The interior decoration of the church has preserved frescoes in the style of Russian religious painting from the early 20th century, created with the blessing of Archbishop Tikhon of Yaroslavl and Rostov, who later became the first patriarch after the two-century "synodal" period in the history of the Russian church.

Recently, one of the altars was consecrated in the winter church, and prayers have once again been heard. This instills hope for the gradual restoration of this significant spiritual center of the Mologa land.
